3 Things to Consider Before Starting a Podcast

Podcasting is becoming a widely popular way to deliver content, especially since 42 million Americans listen to podcasts weekly and numbers consistently growing year over year. With the increase of bluetooth stereo systems in cars and home systems like the echo in homes, that number is only going to increase. Before you jump on the bandwagon and decide to start a podcast here’s three important things to consider first.

  1. What do you want people who listen to your podcast to do? Even if your answer is simply: “be entertained,” there’s probably more too it: like visit the sponsor’s website who’s paying for me to entertain you. Learn more about the company’s product who’s funding this podcast. Download the white-paper that explains more about my business. Bottom line, make sure you answer this question before you do one more thing about starting a podcast.
  2. How will you know if you’re successful? Podcast listeners often consume your content while they are doing other things, they aren’t hovering over the link you properly placed and many times can’t safely take immediate action. You, or the stakeholders supporting the podcast, will quickly wonder: “is this working?” It’s important to have clearly defined KPI’s going into the creation of your podcast, that everyone agrees on for measuring success.
  3. How does podcasting fit into your larger content and social strategy? Podcasting is simply a medium, and it works best when it is interconnected with other strategic mediums that are part of a larger strategy and plan. Do you have an audience that’s already built to consume your podcast? Or will you also have to build an audience to listen to your podcast?
